I
live in California and I’m a retired 73 year old former Mormon
for 35 plus years, married in the temple, actively participated
in ward activities as a Sunday school leader and Stake
missionary. Questions and doubts arose and I was not able to
find satisfactory answers so I investigated the facts of
Mormonism on my own and ultimately found truth in the Bible, the
book that Mormons say they do not trust. Now I am confident in
my eternal security as I trust in Jesus Christ alone.
I am now 73, retired from a firefighter career of 32 years,
was a Mormon for about 35 years, married in the temple and an
active member for many years.
Name:
Glenn
State: California
Occupation: Firefighter
(retired)
Time in LDS: 35 years
LDS Church positions: Elder,
Missions Chairman, Usher
When I was just a toddler my mother was killed in a traffic
accident. Three years later my dad was remarried to a lady
who was a member of the LDS Church and who became the only
mother I ever knew while growing up. My step-mother enrolled
my younger brother and me in the local Mormon Church and I
was baptized at the age of eight. I went on to receive both
the Aaronic and Melchezedic priesthoods and was actively
involved in church work serving in Sunday school leadership
and as a Stake missionary.
I was married in the St. George Temple and continued for
several years as a faithful LDS member. Unfortunately my
marriage failed as spiritual matters were an ongoing topic
and source of contention as I questioned the teachings I had
received over the years. I then earnestly sought the truth
concerning the many claims of Mormonism which I could not
find any reasonable evidence to back up from my local ward
leadership. Joseph Smith’s claims concerning the gold plates
and the numerous changes made to that “perfect” Book of
Mormon; the notion that mere humans could one day become a
god; the teaching that there are a multitude of gods ruling
many planets; the notion that polygamy was God’s celestial
plan; the historical teachings of previous prophets which
later prophets contradict are but a few of the questions
that I struggled with. I also began to see that the LDS
Church does not reveal the true history of its early days.
Upon investigating the Bible I found it could be trusted and
it is not un-reliable as taught in Mormonism (Eighth Article
of Faith). In fact I found an entirely different message
within the Bible than what I had been taught in the LDS
Church. I came to realize I am a sinner and was on my way to
eternal torment and not destined to become a god. I soon was
brought to a testimony of Jesus Christ and His redeeming
work on the cross and since receiving Him into my life as
Lord and Savior I have had total peace concerning my
relationship with God and eternity.
Having raised a family of seven children my wife and I are
now retired. We have been in active fellowship in a local
church for many years. I have served in various
responsibilities and as a deacon and elder. I consider Psalm
40 my life scripture as “my feet are now on the
solid Rock.”
